Devices, such as power switches, can be destinations for external alert actions. An action in an alert policy using a serial template defines how a command is sent to a serial alert device. See the Operations Sentinel Console Help for information on alert policies and serial templates within alert policies.
Following are a few important points about this interface:
Use Administration mode of Operations Sentinel Console to specify alert actions and serial templates in an alert policy. These determine the commands sent to a serial alert device.
The Operations Sentinel interface for external alert actions only writes to the connected alert device. It does not read from the alert device. This means that any responses, such as a status returned from the alert device are not used.
Since Operations Sentinel does not read from the alert device, interactive sessions with the alert device are not supported.
Connect serial devices that are used for alert communications through a terminal/communications server.
You must set communication specifications (line speed, parity, number of bits, stop bits) as required by the serial device.
Available serial devices differ in their cabling and interface needs. They can have DTE or DCE interfaces. Refer to your serial device documentation for specific information.
