You need the following information from your paging service:
Telephone number of the service computer (paging terminal)
Paging service or serial device requirements (normally 7-bit characters, 1 stop bit, even parity)
Maximum baud rate (TAP recommends a maximum rate of 1200 bits per second (bps). Higher speeds are possible with numeric or tone pagers.)
Limitations or paging service requirements
Maximum length of numeric messages
Maximum length of alphanumeric messages
Allowable character set for alphanumeric messages
Multiple personal identification numbers (PINs) are supported, if required
Be aware that the paging service may reformat your messages, for example, to remove consecutive spaces.
The following are the message size limitations:
Operations Sentinel supports a maximum message size of 230 characters when TAP is used. Longer messages are truncated.
There is no message size limit when TAP is not used.
Numeric paging services typically support a message size of 10 to 20 characters. Alphanumeric paging services typically support a message size of 70 to 90 characters. Depending on the service, larger messages may be truncated or rejected.
