When no protocol is specified in a modem template, Operations Sentinel supports numeric and tone pagers. This approach is appropriate when the message can be sent using a simple ASCII string and does not require any protocol handshaking or acknowledgment.
For example, the paging service assigns a phone number to a pager. To send a message, the number is dialed and the paging service answers with a tone. The message is then specified using the numeric keypad of the telephone. This scenario can be automated without using a special paging protocol.
