Starting Trap Service

The Operations Sentinel Trap Service and trap service database are installed with the Windows Resource Monitor.

Note: The Trap Service must be manually started after it is installed, but does not need to be restarted if a previous version was installed and running prior to an upgrade to a new release level.

The Operations Sentinel Trap Service is automatically started on the Operations Sentinel server if you have installed and started the previous version of the SNMP service on the server. When you install WRM on the Operations Sentinel server, the default for the trap destination is localhost. If you install the WRM on an independent Windows system or on another Operations Sentinel server, you are prompted to specify the trap destination during installation.

You must manually start the Operations Sentinel Trap Service after installation of the WRM if no previous version of SNMP service was installed. To start the Trap Service use one of the following methods:

The Services window appears. There are no user visible interfaces specific to the installation of the Operations Sentinel Trap Service.

You can change the default settings for the Operations Sentinel Trap Service at this time. You can start the service explicitly, or set it so that Windows starts it automatically.

  1. With Operations Sentinel Trap Service highlighted, right-click and then select Properties, or double-click the highlighted text.

The Operations Sentinel Trap Properties window appears.

  2. From Startup type list, select Automatic.

This will start the Operations Sentinel Trap Service whenever the server starts.

Note: To open Services window on a 64-bit operating system, from the Start menu choose Run. In the Run dialog box, type services.msc -32 and click OK.
