TELNET Connection

All UNIX and Linux systems provide TELNET access. TELNET servers support various display protocols including

ANSI X3.64 (TELNET or tnvt220 terminal emulator)
tn3270 terminal emulator
tn5250 terminal emulator

Operations Sentinel only supports management and control of UNIX and Linux systems that have TELNET servers supporting ANSI X3.64 display protocols. Operations Sentinel does not support TELNET protocols tn3270 and tn5250.

TELNET Connection Considerations

The following are the advantages:
- Inexpensive, using an existing LAN or WAN
- Full control and automation after the boot process
- Multiple console traffic sessions possible
- Easy to set up
The following are the disadvantages:
- No control of the boot process of the managed system
- No means to redirect console traffic to a TELNET session for certain UNIX and Linux operating systems
- Console traffic passed over the connection is not secure
