Operations Sentinel is designed to run as a Windows client or server application. It is not developed with the intent of executing in the Terminal Services for Windows environment. By default, Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2012 R2 run Terminal Services. Regardless of whether your data center environment requires it, Operations Sentinel can run under control of Terminal Services with little noticeable impact, if it is configured properly. There are a number of advantages, disadvantages, and restrictions to running Operations Sentinel workstation under Terminal Services.
Advantages
You can use fewer Operations Sentinel workstations by allowing multiple users to access one or more Operations Sentinel workstations using Terminal Services.
You can enhance Security by placing the Operations Sentinel environment within a firewall and only permitting access to Operations Sentinel from outside the firewall using Terminal Services. The connection from the workstation of the user to the Operations Sentinel workstation is through the Terminal-Services-secured connection. The level of encryption is configured in Terminal Services and applies to all Terminal Services connections.
Disadvantages and Restrictions
You risk potential performance problems if you execute multiple Operations Sentinel clients on the same workstation or on the same Operations Sentinel server.
You must first log on to the Terminal Services server from a workstation to gain access to Operations Sentinel applications.
You cannot use all supported means of accessing Windows systems for remote desktop control when Operations Sentinel Console is executed from a Terminal Services session.
There is little difference between running Operations Sentinel under Terminal Services and running it directly on your workstation. You might notice the screen updates are slower, but they should still occur well within an acceptable tolerance. If they do not, then you should investigate the performance impact that Operations Sentinel under Terminal Services is having on your servers.
There is no impact to the replicated screens from ANSI X3.64/UNIX and MCP systems.
