Managing Traffic on Systems with Integrated Consoles

Integrated consoles connect directly to a graphics card in the processor cabinet.These are usually VGA displays.Access to console traffic on these systems requires that you redirect the console traffic normally sent to the integrated console to a serial port or to a TELNET session.

Redirecting Console Traffic on UnixWare Systems

UnixWare systems provide a simple method of redirecting the integrated console to a serial port. This method requires a change to the boot configuration file (/stand/boot) and a reboot of the system. You can configure it to redirect all console functions to the serial port or specify that the serial console just be a mirroring site, where only output is displayed, and no input is permitted. See the man page for boot for your UnixWare system. The following specification in the file /stand/boot for a Unisys SMP 5400 system redirects all console functions to a serial terminal on serial port 0:

console=iasy(0,B9600N8)

Redirecting Console Traffic on Other UNIX Systems

Most types of UNIX systems provide redirection capabilities. The method varies among different variations of UNIX operating systems and hardware platforms.

Unisys has compiled information about redirection techniques for several types of UNIX systems. The information is contained in PLE 15916605. Unisys updates this PLE periodically as new information becomes available. Consult with your local Unisys representative (or third-party supplier) to obtain a copy of this PLE.

Setting Up the Serial Port

The serial port to which you direct traffic should be configured just as if you were connecting a terminal to it. See your vendor documentation for information on configuring a serial terminal.
