The Timeout Period defines the maximum time in seconds between messages from the MCP system before Operations Sentinel considers the system to have timed out. The default timeout period value for an MCP system is 150. The Operations Sentinel Server services require that each MCP system you are monitoring sends a message within a specified period of time. This is the only way the Operations Sentinel Server services can determine whether their connection with the system remains functional.
If the interval between messages from a specific MCP system exceeds the Timeout Period value you set for that system, Operations Sentinel drops the existing connection with the system and creates a new one. This timeout event causes an alert to be raised. Operations Sentinel clears this alert when it establishes a new connection.
The UTILIZATION_INTERVAL parameter
When you configure the MCP Agent for each MCP system, you can regulate the interval for sending utilization data messages by using the UTILIZATION_INTERVAL parameter. You should coordinate the value for the Timeout Period you specify for an MCP system and the UTILIZATION_INTERVAL of the system, to provide an effective scheme for monitoring the connection. It is recommended that the UTILIZATION_INTERVAL value should be no more than one-half to one-third of the Timeout Period value. The default value for the UTILIZATION_INTERVAL is 20 seconds.
See the Operations Sentinel Interface for ClearPath MCP Installation and Configuration Guide for information on configuring the UTILIZATION_INTERVAL value on the system.
To change the timeout period value
Under the Managed Groups node in the navigation pane, click MCP Systems.
In the display pane, click the desired system(s).
In the details pane, enter the desired timeout period value in the Timeout Period property.
Save your changes.
If you set the timeout period value to 0, this process is disabled. This means that the Operations Sentinel Server services cannot determine whether their connection to the MCP system remains functional. If a connection fails when the Timeout Period value is set to 0, you must close the failed connection and reestablish a new one manually. Close the failed connection by setting the Monitor property value to False for the system, setting the Enabled property in the Log Policies node to False to stop logging for the system, and then save your changes. Reestablish the connection by setting the Monitor property to True and the Enabled property to True, and then save your changes.
