A UNIX system is a system that uses UNIX as its operating system software. A Linux system is a system that uses Linux as its operating system software.
Monitored UNIX and Linux systems provide ANSI X3.64-compliant interfaces. Operations Sentinel can attach through a direct serial connection or through terminal/communications server ports to obtain console control. It can also use a TELNET or SSH connection to obtain system information without console control. On managed systems where console control, logging of console messages, and login access are not desired, you can configure Operations Sentinel to ping the system to monitor its network accessibility.
You must define a different UNIX or Linux system to represent each UNIX or Linux partitions in ClearPath and ES7000 Systems. See Server Properties for details on defining a ClearPath Enterprise Systems or ES7000 Systems.
The Event Server API allows you to develop your own applications for collecting data on each managed UNIX and Linux system and sending this information to the Operations Sentinel server. These applications can also monitor and act on information sent to Operations Sentinel for other sources. See the Operations Sentinel Event Server Application Program Interface Programming Guide for more information.
