Setting the Network Name Property (UNIX/Linux)

The Network Name property specifies the Internet name of the managed UNIX or Linux system, or the terminal/communications server used to connect it to the Operations Sentinel server. The network name must be included in the hosts file on the Operations Sentinel server, in the Domain Name Server, or in the Windows Internet Naming Service.

Specify a Network Name only when the connection between the managed system and the Operations Sentinel server requires that Operations Sentinel Console access the LAN. This is the situation when using a TELNET or SSH connection, a terminal/communications server, or a ping monitoring interface. If the system is directly connected to a serial port on the Operations Sentinel server, do not specify a network name.

When two or more systems are configured so that they are connected to serial ports on the same terminal/communications server, they use the same network name (the name of the terminal/communications server). They are differentiated by their Service Name property values. This is also true when you want to manage a system with two or more TELNET or SSH connections. In this case, you would define two distinct managed systems in Operations Sentinel with the same Network Names values but with different Service Names values.

To change the network name

  1. Under the Managed Objects node in the navigation pane, click UNIX/Linux Systems.

  2. In the display pane, click the desired system(s).

  3. In the details pane, change the Network Name property to the desired name. The Network Name property value must be unique; another UNIX or Linux system cannot have the same network name. The name can have a maximum of 64 characters. The first character must be a letter. The last character must be a letter or a digit. The remainder might be letters, digits, hyphens, underscores, or periods. This name is not case-sensitive.

    • For TELNET or SSH connections

The network name is the Internet name of the managed system. Specify the same name as the name you specify in the External Network Name property.

    • For a terminal/communications server

The network name is the name of the terminal/communications server which is connected to the system.

    • For ping monitoring interface

The network name is the Internet name of the managed system. Specify the same name as the name you specify in the External Network Name property.

    • For a direct connection

      Specify no network name.

  4. Save your changes.

If you change the Network Name property before you add or change it in the hosts file on the Operations Sentinel server, in the Domain Name Server, or in the Windows Internet Naming Service, you must either

Both of these options automatically force the system to reestablish a connection and recognize the changes you made.
