Serial Template Properties

The following table describes the properties displayed in the details pane for a serial template. Use this table to help you interpret and enter data in the details pane.

You might also need to consult your external device documentation.

Property

Definition

Network Name

Provides the Internet network name of the terminal/communications server that is connected to the external device. The network name must be in the hosts file on the Operations Sentinel server, in the Domain Name Server, or in the Windows Internet Naming Service. See the Operations Sentinel Administration and Configuration Guide for more information on specifying network names.

Do not specify a value for this property if the external device is directly connected to the Operations Sentinel server.

Initialization

Provides the initialization data that must be sent to condition the external device before it is used to communicate. Operations Sentinel sends the initialization string to the external device to initialize the device before performing the remainder of the action.

For the appropriate string to use, consult your external device documentation. Do not specify a value for this property if the device does not require initial conditioning.

Service Name

Provides the name from the services file that identifies the destination service address for actions that use this template. For example, the service name can define the RS-232 serial port to which an external power control device is connected. You must create an entry for this service name in the services file on the Operations Sentinel server if one does not already exist. See the Operations Sentinel Administration and Configuration Guide for more information on the services file.

If you also specify a network name for the template, the service name refers to a port on the terminal/communications server identified by that network name, which is connected to the external device. The default line characteristics for the port are determined by the terminal/communications server port configuration. If you do not specify a network name, the service name refers to a port on the Operations Sentinel server that is directly connected to the external device.

Operations Sentinel assumes the following default line characteristics for the device being connected to the port on the Operations Sentinel server.

  • 8-bit character size

  • No parity

  • 1 stop bit

  • 9600 baud

You can change these values using alias parameters for the service in the services file.

If you do not specify a value for the Service property, any action using this template always fails and an event is recorded in the log SP-EAI on the Operations Sentinel server. You can examine this log using the Operations Sentinel Log Viewer.

Name

Provides the name of the serial template. The name you specify should be unique and distinguish the template from others. A unique name facilitates the copying of templates across multiple alert policies.

You can rename a template by editing this property.

Type

Displays the type of template. For a serial template, the value is always Serial. This property is read-only.
