Defining the Alert Applications Property

You can launch an external application for every alert in Operations Sentinel Console whose Application (APPL) attribute value matches a regular expression you enter for the Alert Applications property. An external application appears in the shortcut menu of each such alert in the Alerts window.

To enter the alert applications values

  1. In the navigation pane, select the External Applications node and then select the desired launch definition(s) in the display pane.

  2. In the details pane, select the Alert Applications property and click the ellipsis () in the value field. An Alert Applications dialog box appears.

  3. Click Add to enter each regular expression. Make sure each name, including spacing, is exactly the same as it appears in an event report.

Note: Regular expressions allow an application to be launched for all alerts whose Alert Applications values are similar. For example

    • If you specify Alert Applications values of ^A and ^B, the external application appears in the shortcut menu of any alert whose APPL attribute starts with A or B.

    • If you specify Alert Applications values of A$ and B$, the external application appears in the shortcut menu of any alert whose APPL attribute ends with A or B.

    • If you specify an Alert Applications value of .*, the external application appears in the shortcut menu of every alert.

The regular expressions you enter are case-sensitive. See Regular Expression Meanings and Examples for more information on regular expressions or search for the term regular expression on the Microsoft website (www.microsoft.com).

  4. Press Enter.

If you want to add another value, click Add again. Repeat these steps until you have entered all of the desired regular expressions.

  5. Click OK to close the window. The changes you make appear in bold until you save them.

  6. Save your changes.

You can also modify or delete values you already entered using the Alert Applications dialog box.
