Copying and Pasting a Policy

You can copy policies or resources in a resource group and then paste them elsewhere. Note that if you paste a policy within the same Operation Sentinel server, a copy of the policy is first created and added to the policy list. If you paste the policy within a different Operation Sentinel server (for example, a different instance of Operations Sentinel Console), and the policy item does not exist, a new policy item is created and added. If the policy item already exists, a dialog appears asking if you want to overwrite the policy.

Pasting a resource is exactly the same as pasting a policy except it differentiates based on policies instead of Operation Sentinel servers.

To copy a policy, do the following:

  1. Select the Windows or UNIX/Linux node under the Resource Monitor Policies node.

  2. Select the desire policy in the display pane.

  3. Right-click to display the context menu.

  4. Select Copy menu item or press Ctrl-C to copy the policy.

  5. Select the policy in the navigation pane.

  6. Right-click to display the context menu and select Copy menu item or press Ctrl-C to copy the policy. You can also click the Copy toolbar button.

To paste a policy, do the following:

  1. Select the Windows or UNIX/Linux node.

  2. Right-click in the display pane to display the context menu.

  3. Select Paste, or you can select Paste menu item or press Ctrl-V to paste the policy. You can also select the Windows or UNIX/Linux node in the navigation pane, right-click to display the context menu and select Paste menu item or press Ctrl-V to paste the policy. You can also click Paste toolbar button instead of selecting the menu.

To copy or paste resources, do the following:

  1. Select a resource group for a policy in the navigation pane.

  2. Select any desired resources in the display pane.

  3. Right-click to display the context menu and select Copy or Paste menu item or press Ctrl-C or Ctrl-V key to copy or paste. You can also click the Copy or Paste toolbar button instead of selecting the menu item to copy or paste an item.

The pasted policy or resource item is added to the list, however the item is not permanent until you click Save. Prior to saving, you can click Discard. This restores the data to the last saved version.

Saving a Policy

Bolded items indicate unsaved data. Note that saving a policy does not distribute the policy to monitored systems. You must perform a Distribute to send the saved data to monitored system. If you exit Operations Sentinel Console with an unsaved resource policy, a display appears asking if you want to save the data. After you perform a Save, all instances of Operations Sentinel Console that are connected to the operations server are updated with the saved configuration data.

To save all pending changes

1. Click the File menu item in the main menu.

2. Select Save all changes menu item, or press Ctrl-S. You can also click the Save toolbar button.

This saves all changes made to the policies along with all other changes in Operations Sentinel Console.

Discard

To discard all pending changes

1. Click on the File menu item in the main menu.

2. Select Discard all changes menu item, or press the ‘Ctrl-R’ key.

This discards all changes made to policies along with all other changes in Operations Sentinel Console and restores the data to the last saved version.

Distributing a Policy

You must perform a distribute after you change a policy before the policy takes effect on the monitored system. You can distribute the policy to one managed system, to a subset of managed systems, or to all managed systems. If you try to perform a distribute, and you have not saved the changes, a dialog appears asking you to perform a Save.

  1. Distributing selected resource policies to all managed systems

  2. Select the appropriate resource policy type under the Resource Monitor Policies node.

  3. Select the policies in the display pane.

  4. Right-click the selected policies to display the context menu and then select Distribute.

Distributing Resource Policies to a Subset of Managed Systems

  1. Select the Resource Monitor Policies node. the system type, and then the policy.

  2. Select the Systems tab in the details pane

  3. This displays the managed systems assigned to the policy.

  4. Select the desired managed systems then right click to display the context menu.

  5. Select Distribute menu item.

  6. Select Action and then Distribute in the main menu, or click the distribute toolbar button.

During the distribute, a dialog appears showing the progress. The resource policy is distributed to one managed system at a time. Click Cancel to stop the distribute while the dialog is displayed. The distribution is stopped immediately. If an error is encountered during the distribute operation, an error dialog appears asking if you want to continue. You can continue or stop the distribute operation. Managed systems that already received the policy update are not reverted.

Prior to the distribution of a policy, if there is unsaved data a dialog is displayed to prompt the user to first save all unsaved data.  User can either click ‘OK’ to save all changes prior to policy distribution, or ‘Cancel’ to not save any changes and stop the distribute operation.

A read-only Boolean flag in each managed system is displayed to notify the administrator if the agent on the managed system is current, i.e. has the same policy data as configured in the OSC.  When the version between the OSC and the managed system are mismatched, the Boolean flag is set to false to show a ‘distribute’ should be done to synchronize the resource policy configuration.  Once the policy data is synchronized, the Boolean flag is reset back to true.
