How Migration to a New Level Occurs

To migrate from one level to another—for example, from 3.1 to 4.0—the customer proceeds as follows:

  1. The customer acquires ClearPath Forward release level 4.0 from Unisys and orders the two new Intel platforms.

The level of s-Par firmware corresponding to release level 4.0 is placed on the two new Intel platforms at the Unisys factory. The Intel platforms are then delivered to the customer site and installed by the service representative.

  2. The Unisys service representative migrates the Fabric Management Platform to level 4.0.

None of the following need to change:

    • The Fabric Management Platform hardware

    • The level 3.1 Intel platform hardware

    • The Interconnect hardware

    • Furthermore, for partitions (see s-Par and Partitions) on level 3.1 Intel platforms, none of the following needs to occur:

      • Backup/restoration of partitions

      • Rebooting of partitions

      • Recreation (recommissioning) of partitions

      • Reconfiguration of partitions

Existing partitions (both 3.1and 4.0) continue to run and are unaffected by migrating the Fabric Management Platform.

  3. The Unisys service representative migrates the one desired Intel platform from level 3.1 to level 4.0.

    The service representative

    1. Stops all partitions on the Intel platform

    2. Shuts down the s-Par firmware

    3. Performs the upgrade, which updates the s-Par firmware

    4. Reboots the platform

    5. Restarts the s-Par firmware

    6. Restarts the partitions, which formerly were level 3.1 and now are 4.0

    Notes:

    • The previously existing 3.1 partitions now exist as 4.0 partitions. These partitions do not need to be recommissioned, nor is it necessary to do a restore of the partitions’ operating systems.

    • In cases where you are skipping a level during migration—for example, from 2.0 to 4.0—you must first migrate from 2.0 to 3.0 or 3.1, and then migrate from 3.0 or 3.1 to 4.0.
