Specifying Properties of the Launch Definition

The following table describes the properties displayed in the details pane for a launch definition. Use this table to help you interpret and enter data in the details pane.

You must specify values for the following properties:

Property

Definition

Alert Applications

Indicates the alerts from which a user of Operations Sentinel Console can launch the external application. The Alert Applications property value lists zero or more regular expressions that match the Application (APPL) attribute of alert event reports. The external application can be launched for any alert, provided the APPL value in the event report that raised the alert matches a regular expression you entered in the Alert Applications property. See the Operations Sentinel Administration and Configuration Guide for a description of the APPL attribute in alert event reports.

If you specify no value, the external application cannot be launched for specific alerts. To enter values, click the ellipsis () in the Alert Applications property.

See Defining the Alert Applications Property for additional information.

Application Label

Provides the name of the external application that appears in Operations Sentinel Console menus in contexts where the user can launch the application. By default, the Application Label is the same as the Name.

Application Menu

Indicates where the external application appears in the Applications menu and in shortcut menus in Operations Sentinel Console.

For the external application to appear in the Applications menu, you must also set the MainMenu Application property to True.

Leave this property empty to have it appear in the top level of the menu. The text entered in the Application Label property appears in the menu.

Set up a cascade menu if you want some or all of your site's external applications to appear under a common submenu. To do this, simply enter the name in the Application Menu property you want the external application to appear under. Do this for every external application you want to appear under this common name.

Command String

Provides the command string that is executed when the external application is launched.

The command string you specify can be used to launch a Windows executable and typically calls an MS-DOS command file or script file that you supply.

See Defining the Command String for additional information.

Launch New

Indicates what Operations Sentinel Console does when you launch an external application that you previously launched and is still currently running.

Use the arrow () in this property to select either

  • True

Another instance of the external application is launched.

  • False

The existing instance of the external application is brought in front of all applications and windows that you have open. If no instance is currently running, a new instance of the external application is launched.

The default value is False.

Main Menu Application

Indicates if the external application can be launched from the Applications menu of Operations Sentinel Console. Use the arrow () in this property to select either

  • True

The external application can be launched from the Applications menu.

  • False

The external application cannot be launched from the Applications menu.

If you set this property to True, the Application Menu property determines where this external application appears in the Applications menu.

Name

Provides the internal name of the launch definition. Choose a name that easily identifies the external application it launches.

You can rename the launch definition by editing this property. However, you should not rename a launch definition that begins with SPO.

Object Filter

Indicates which managed objects a user can launch this external application for. This external application appears in the shortcut menu of any managed object that satisfies the object filter you specify. If you specify no object filter, this external application is not included in the shortcut menu of any managed objects.

This property also controls which external applications appear in the drop-down menu when setting the Default Action property for object classes and managed objects.

Click the ellipsis () in the Object Filter property to set the filter condition.

See Defining the Object Filter Property for additional help creating a filter condition.
