The External Applications node in Operations Sentinel Console allows you to configure launch definitions for external applications that exist on the Operations Sentinel server. You do not create an external application using Operations Sentinel Console. However, you use Operations Sentinel Console to define the launch definition that specifies how a user can initiate the external application you created.
Unisys provides you with sample external applications and launch definitions you can use at your site.
About an External Application
An external application is a site-defined Windows script, HTML application, or executable program that can run on an Operations Sentinel workstation. The application is called external because it is not a part of Operations Sentinel; it is an application your site created. You are provided with resources to assist you in writing external applications.
You can create an external application to
Create a trouble ticket for an outstanding alert.
Send commands to a managed system to resolve problems on that system.
Request information from the user to resolve a problem on a managed system.
Initiate an independent customer-written application or third-party application with its own application window.
Initiate other system management tools.
Start a web browser that opens to the Server Sentinel home page or to a site-defined intranet page.
Open a terminal emulation session for a terminal emulator not qualified by Unisys.
External applications are stored in the data-folder\extapp-scripts folder on the Operations Sentinel server. data-folder is specified during the installation of Operations Sentinel. This folder and its contents are carried forward when a new level of Operations Sentinel is installed.
After you have created an external application, you must define how to launch it using Operations Sentinel Console.
About a Launch Definition
An external application launch definition consists of several properties you specify that determine how and where the external application can be launched. You can use the External Application Wizard to assist you in creating a new launch definition; or you can copy an existing launch definition and edit its properties using the details pane. At minimum, you must specify
Name
Command string
One or more of the following: Alert Applications, Main Menu Application, and Object Filter. If you do not define at least one of these properties, you have no way of launching the external application.
See Launch Definition Propertiesfor a complete description of the properties of a launch definition.
