Log Source Properties

The following table describes the properties displayed in the details pane for a log source. Use this table to help you interpret and enter data in the details pane.

Property Name

Definition

Console

Displays the name of the console or system producing messages being logged. This property is read-only.

If the Console property is empty, Operations Sentinel has no connection with the log source.

Notes:

  • For OS 2200 systems, the Console property displays the name of a console connected to the system.

  • For UNIX, Linux, and MCP systems, the Console property displays the name of the system itself.

Enabled

Controls whether messages and events from the log source are actually logged. If you set the property to False, messages from that source are not logged.

Use the arrow () in the Enabled property to select either True or False.

See Enabling Logging for more information.

Log Source

Displays the name of the log source. This property is read-only.

Each log can record messages and event reports from multiple log sources. A log source represents one of the following:

  • System

If the log source is a system connected to Operations Sentinel without a system console in between, the log source name is the Name value specified for the system when the system was defined using Operations Sentinel Console.

  • Application

If the log source is an external application, the log source name is the name of the application.

  • Operations Sentinel

If the log source is an Operations Sentinel component such as SPLOG or SPLM, the log source name is the name of this component.

  • OS 2200 console

If the log source is an OS 2200 console, the log source name is the Name value specified for the console when the console was defined using Operations Sentinel Console

See Specific Logs for a complete list of available log sources.

If the log source name contains any of the following characters, they are converted to underscores: / \ : * ? “ < > |

Network

Displays the internal name that Operations Sentinel uses to connect to a log source that is a system or an OS 2200 console. This property is read-only.

This property has no value for log sources that are applications independent of Operations Sentinel, or if the system is directly connected to the Operations Sentinel server through each device’s serial port.

Notes:

  • For OS 2200 systems, this value is a combination of the server name, system name, and console name values.

  • For MCP, UNIX, and Linux systems, this value is the system’s Network Name followed by its Service Name.

State

Displays the overall logging state of the log source, which can be Active, Inactive, or Error. This property is read-only.

Notes:

  • For an OS 2200 console, logging occurs if a connection between Operations Sentinel and the OS 2200 console is established.

  • For an MCP system, logging occurs if a connection between the MCP Agent on the MCP system and the Operations Sentinel server is established.

  • For a UNIX, Linux, and Windows system, logging occurs if a connection between Operations Sentinel and the system is established.

Continuous Display

This property applies only to OS 2200 console log sources, and controls whether continuous display messages from the OS 2200 console are logged. A value of True means these messages are being logged, but only if the value of Enabled is also True. A value of False means these messages are not being logged. The default value is False.

Use the arrow () in the Continuous Display property to select either True or False.

See Changing OS 2200 Console Logging Options for more information.
