An external application is a site-defined Windows script, HTML application, or executable program that runs on your Operations Sentinel workstation. This is a powerful way to extend the capabilities of Operations Sentinel. For example, the application could
Run a program to resolve the problem that caused the alert.
Create a trouble ticket for the problem.
Provide information to an administrator or third-party management application.
External applications can be configured to be launched by right-clicking certain alerts in the Alerts window. External applications can also be configured to be launched from the main Operations Sentinel Console window by
Right-clicking certain icons in a topology in the display pane
Right-clicking certain managed objects in a table in the display pane
Right-clicking certain alerts in the details pane
Clicking the desired external application from the Applications menu
When launching an external application, you typically do not receive a confirmation window unless the application itself displays a confirmation.
Each time you launch an external application, Operations Sentinel writes a message to the SP-EXTAPP log. This message includes the system name, the time you opened the session, your Windows login, and the process id (pid) of Operations Sentinel Console.
For more information on external applications, see About External Applications. Contact your site's Operations Sentinel administrator to request a new external application or a change to an existing one.
