LINC/MON has three basic types of operating mode, and provides four different types of monitoring information, as shown in the following table.
Mode | Information Available | Data Displayed |
---|---|---|
Monitor (transactions) | Statistics on transactions processed during the last period, or since start of transaction monitoring |
|
Monitor (System Event) | Occurrence of System events such as:
|
|
Viewing | View of a logical log file record. The content of a logical log record varies for different logical record types. | For each pivot number, all log record details, including any messages sent or received. |
Inquiry | Names and details of Ispecs and attributes |
|
Monitoring Transaction Throughput
When you are monitoring transaction throughput, live monitoring information is displayed on Page 1 of your terminal, giving you statistics for the transactions processed over the latest time period. This time period can be set when you initiate LINC/MON (Refer to Resetting Monitor Parameters).
The live monitoring information is displayed as a bar chart. If subsystems apply for your application, a separate bar is shown for each subsystem, as well as a bar giving the total for all subsystems.
Monitoring System Events
When you are monitoring System events, LINC/MON displays descriptive information in columns on Page 2 of your terminal. However, if you specify on initiation that no transactions are to be analyzed, System event information is displayed on Page 1.
Viewing Mode
In viewing mode, you might view any record in any available log file for your application, whether current or past. Analysis information about the control properties within each logical log record is also provided.
The log record heading information is displayed on Page 1. If log message text is requested by entering the DISPLAY command, this is presented on Page 2.
In addition to obtaining the details of a transaction relating to a specified log pivot number, you can use viewing mode to obtain details of transactions that cause a particular condition, such as system failure or looping. Refer to Activity Log for more information on pivot number.
Refer to Using LINC/MON to Read the Log for more information about the properties contained in the log file.
Inquiry Mode
Using inquiry mode, you might obtain names and details of your application Ispecs and attributes, and then use these details to make inquiries on your log files.
More information and instructions for using LINC/MON are included in the following subsections. An alphabetic reference list of all LINC/MON commands is included in a subsequent subsection.
