Managing Environments

Environment is a virtual concept of one version or a group of multiple versions of Data Exchange. It helps you to label an installation and use Data Exchange for a particular purpose. You can name an environment "Production" or "Test" or any other name as you wish.

When installing a Data Exchange Windows component, you must specify which environment to install the component in. You can install one version or multiple versions of Data Exchange in one environment. If multiple versions are installed, each individual version runs independently.

The virtual environment concept is not to be confused with the hardware environment. You can define one "Test" virtual environment in DEMS, and physically you can have DDW, and Data Exchange Windows Runtime components installed in different Windows partitions, but they are all installed under the virtual environment "Test".

You can also have two versions of Data Exchange installed in the same hardware environment, but one version is installed under one virtual environment, and the other version is installed under another virtual environment.

A virtual environment has a Security Profile. The Security Profile indicates whether secure connections are enabled or disabled in this environment. For more information about Security Profile, refer to Sections Managing Security Profile and Securing Network Connections.

You can view, create, and edit the environments on the Manage Environment tab. DEMS provides a built-in environment called Production without secure connection enabled. You could either use this environment or create your own.

Note: If you cannot view the details, check if scripting is activated in the Internet browser.

You can create roles, assign the required privileges to the roles, and then associate users to these privileges and environments.

Note that you can delete only a user-defined environment and not the built-in environment.

 Warning

Do not delete the environment if Data Exchange components are already installed in that environment. First uninstall the Data Exchange components that you had installed in this environment, and then delete the environment.
