About Alert Policies

You use the Alert Policies node to define and maintain alert policies. An alert policy is a mechanism that enables your data center to automatically respond to an alert when it is raised, acknowledged, or cleared.

An alert policy applies to all alert event reports generated by Operations Sentinel as well as those forwarded by other applications that generate alert event reports. To cause actions through the active alert policy, an alert event report does not need to apply to a specific managed system. This allows your operations staff to be notified of events that occur within the managed environment regardless of whether that event is associated with a specific managed system.

You can define different alert policies for different situations. This lets you create one alert policy that is active on weekdays, for example, and a different alert policy that is active on weekends. Only one alert policy can be active on an Operations Sentinel server at a time. An alert policy is activated and deactivated using Operations Sentinel Console. Operations Sentinel does not execute any actions in an alert policy unless that alert policy is active.

The active alert policy provides additional automation, alert notification, and escalation by

This provides your data center with additional ways to automatically notify your operations staff or to perform other actions when a significant event occurs.

A sample alert policy is provided with Operations Sentinel shared data folder named SpAlert.i in eai folder. This alert policy includes an action list for the identifier of each of the alerts raised by Operations Sentinel. However, no actions are associated with these action lists. You can extend this alert policy by adding actions to any of the action lists, or by adding your own action lists. You can also copy action lists from this alert policy to your own alert policies.
