Complete the following steps to develop a basic alert policy.
Add templates and define their generic actions, like sending an email message or sounding an alarm device.
There are three types of templates you can choose from: Command, Modem, and Serial. See About Templates if you need assistance in choosing the type of template you need.
Each action list contains the actions to be initiated when a specific alert is raised, acknowledged, or cleared. An alert (AL) event report causes an action list to be executed either implicitly through its ALERTID attribute or explicitly by specifying the EXT_ACTION_LIST attribute. Thus, you must coordinate the action lists you develop with the applications at your site that raise, acknowledge, and clear alerts.
Add actions to the action list and define their behaviors. This includes associating each action with a template. If you have actions you want initiated for every alert, add them to the <global> action list.
If you have actions you want initiated for any alert that does not match a specific action list, add them to the <default> action list.
Save the alert policy. You cannot use the alert policy until you save it.
Activate the alert policy. Activating the alert policy starts execution of any actions as alerts are raised, acknowledged, and cleared.
