The $.COBOL option tells the PATCH utility to expect input in COBOL format, that is, with sequence numbers in columns 1 through 6 and a dollar sign in column 7. When this option is TRUE, all special $ records recognized by the PATCH utility must begin in column 7. However, the record actually setting this option must have a $. starting in column 1.
